Re: Airport Laptop Seizures Debated in Washington
I am very very concerned about this severe new invasion of privacy.
The U.S. Government has no business [with] personal property, unless they have a warrant that says specifically what is needed for an investigation that has probable cause. The warrant must be issued by a judge with probable cause demonstrated.
I have been a longtime Republican, but with this severe level of invasion of privacy at a whim and without cause, I will be voting for the President, Senators and Congressman who believe in the citizens' rights and want government to serve the people. Seems like [during] the last five years, it [has been about] how the federal government can spy on its own people more and more and more, all in the name of whatever excuse.
This is very serious and very intrusive! Big Brother has fully arrived and shown himself.

Re: The Transnational Letters: Laptop Seizures

I fully agree: the growing intrusion into the private lives of individuals in the United States is becoming increasingly worrisome. This is especially true in this case because of the very futility of the measure: it is simply ludicrous to assume that any member of a terrorist organization would carry sensitive data on a laptop when it is so much easier to store such data in encrypted form on a server that can be located in and accessed from any part of the globe. On the other hand, how many law-abiding people cherish the thought of having a perfect stranger go through confidential business data or personal financial records stored on their laptops? Your reaction is, I believe, a healthy one: with our vote, we the people decide if we want this erosion of our rights to continue or not. The United States is still a democracy, and it is not too late to react. One is reminded of Benjamin Franklin's famous (and often misquoted) line, "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." -dk-
