Registration opened this week for the Global Business Travel Association convention in August, and GBTA is requiring what appears to be more data than ever before from would-be attendees when they register. Here's a partial list of questions you'll be expected to answer if you plan to attend.

American Airlines' decision to end its ticketing agreement with Orbitz and Orbitz for Business after the companies failed to come to terms on an agreement whereby Orbitz would access AA via the carrier's direct connection "will lead to higher prices and confusion for corporations, business travelers and consumers alike," according to the National Business Travel Association.

More than 80 percent of 934 travel professionals polled Wednesday by NBTA said that when they next travel, they "definitely" or "probably" will accept new TSA security measures including expanded full-body scans and enhanced pat-downs "if it results in increased safety in air travel." Nine percent said they "might or might not" accept the new procedures, while 6 percent said they probably will not and 4 percent said they definitely will not.

The annual Masters Program conference has been closed to the media, according to a National Business Travel Association spokesperson. "Executives who attend The Masters Program will be able to engage in a more frank and open dialog without concerns of being quoted," the official wrote.

There are more signs of a recovery in business and meetings travel, as a new NBTA Foundation survey of 170 North American Travel buyers found that corporate travel budgets grew an average 5.5 percent this year and will grow more than 4 percent in 2011 -- due to higher demand, rising prices and more airline fees.

The National Business Travel Association is altering certain communication procedures after accidentally sending to 52 members an email containing renewal notices for more than 100 members, including their user ID numbers and passwords for NBTA's Web site.
Wednesday's miscue, which the organization blamed on human error, was remedied within an hour, according to a spokeswoman. NBTA sent new emails including only information related to the recipient with passwords that--like the originals--are constructed using the members' first and last names.

Many National Business Travel Association convention attendees cut out on the morning of the last day to avoid overbooked fights and delays, but I tend to stick around for the final education sessions. Along with a few stragglers, I attended the Federal Aviation Administration panel discussion last Wednesday hoping to gain a bit more clarity or information on the next-generation air traffic control system (NextGen), or to learn something new. Thirty-four slides later, I hadn't.

I attended the NBTA Convention in Houston last week. Frankly I have been to so many NBTA conventions, I have lost count (this was probably my 22nd or 23rd convention). What was shocking to me was how there was so little change in the content of the program from those I attended back in the early 1990s. Sessions on travel policy, expense management, globalization, vendor negotiations and meetings management represented the bulk of the content. There were a few progressive sessions on the social Web and mobile apps (the session I spoke at), but in general the lack of innovation and progressive thought was quite evident. Why is the corporate travel industry so stagnant? What does this mean to the state of corporate travel technology? It is my belief that a major culprit is turnover.
