Democracy blooming in the Middle East. Leaderless revolutionaries occupying Wall Street. Student athletes organizing to get paid. Presidential candidates wanting to overthrow the U.S. Tax Code. Do you see the implications for managed travel?

The U.S. General Services Administration launched a mobile app listing hotel, meal and incidental per diem rates for cities in the continental U.S. Taking into consideration how new the app is, there appear to be a few kinks left to work out, but otherwise, it is great platform for quick access to spending limits.

Jonas and I have a tradition every year at the National Business Travel Association convention of getting registered a few hours ahead of our networking responsibilities to leave enough time for recycling. All that crap. You know, in the bag. Then, we ask, what's that bag for? Anyway, this year NBTA deserves praise for not only cutting down on all the crap but also for giving us an app.

Regarding " TECH: Mobile Is Here And It's Called iPhone App Store," I disagree on this one. The iPhone is a great personal device. I carry one. However it is not for managed travel. Ask any IT organization and they are adamant about staying away from iPhones at the enterprise level. An iPhone does not offer the security that BlackBerry does and because of that BlackBerry will remain the leader in the corporate market. Managed travel with the iPhone is never going to catch up as long as IT organizations can't reconcile security requirements with Apple.

I've been a total Apple geek for more than 20 years. So it was with all my strength and might that I attempted to do my job today despite the release of hundreds of new applications for the iPhone, which I bought on the day it was released last year for full price. (I have no regrets despite the price cut that followed.) Those of you who use BlackBerries know what it does for your productivity.
