Business Travel News quotes Travelport deputy group CEO Gordon Wilson saying Travelport would "announce a partnership with a self-booking tool provider that covers the European, Asian and Australian markets," and "sign a partnership deal with a different booking tool provider in the United States."

Growing up, I was an unruly kid. I had every trick in the book up my sleeve, and when my folks tried to get me to do something against my will, let’s just say that I could put Ferris Bueller to shame. Despite my magical talents, I was SOL when my mom made pasta faggioli (or as we called it pasta fazool) for dinner. There I was picking out the pasta from the beans, and unfortunately, my old man would have none of that. You either ate it all, or went hungry because there were no substitutions on Mom’s menu. Being even skinnier than I am now, it was a sad day when Little TD was forced to go to sleep without eating dinner.

The National Business Travel Association's Technology Committee had some fun today spicing up the otherwise dry topic of request for proposals templates for corporate online booking with a live " Family Feud" game show. Based on a survey of 100 travel managers, the panelists dinged and buzzed the crowd to online booking enlightenment.

Part of this frustration concerns added fees, what we like to label in the travel industry as ancillary revenue. The article points to a resurgence of bookings through traditional travel agents.

I'd like to add a little color to your discussion of online share of travel agent bookings in the U.S.

What is it about online adoption, or the lack of it, that creates so much confusion and contradiction? If you believe what you read in papers, industry journals and technology company surveys you would expect it to be the booking mechanism of choice but it isn’t. Why is that? Why do people still want to pick up the phone to a TMC or do their own thing?

Concur executive vice president for technology Tom DePasquale is a bomb thrower, which of course makes him a favorite of we media types. What now? Well, I asked Tom late last month about complaints over the past couple years from online booking providers regarding Concur's proprietary approach to integrating online booking tools with its Concur Expense product. This was just before GetThere announced integration with IBM. Here's what he had to say:

The trouble with transactions is one of definition. "So what," you might say. "After all, one only needs to specify the term clearly and 'Bob's your uncle.' " Oh that it could be that easy and corporations are finding to their cost (as most pay by transaction one way or another) that what they thought was a clear definition is nothing of the sort.
