Orbitz has launched a new platform for traditional travel agents which enables them to book stand-alone hotel rooms as well as vacation packages. This matches (for hotel only anyway) agentaccess, a program which hotels.com has offered to the agency community for some time.

Expedia announced today that they are removing booking/service fees on all travel products sold through Expedia's call centers.

Orbitz will shortly announce the re-birth of the Trip.com brand as a multi-site travel search engine akin to BookingBuddy.com, (an Expedia property) TripAdvisor (also owned by Expedia) Igougo, (a Travelocity property) and TravelZoo's Super Search product.

Executives at Delta and United recently singled out online travel agencies for providing less value than other distributors, namely corporate travel management companies, and suggested that one day OTAs should pay for access to fares and inventory. Asked to respond, officials with Expedia and Travelocity chose their words carefully and an Orbitz spokesman referred me to the Interactive Travel Services Association trade group

Orbitz Worldwide said it would cut $20 million to $25 million in annual expenses, on top of the $20 million announced in November that brought with it 100 job cuts. Officials today did not say how many positions the current action would eliminate, but outgoing president and CEO Steve Barnhart said, "On the people side, this is much more heavily focused on outsourced or external contractual resources.

Orbitz Worldwide appointed former Expedia executive Barney Harford president and CEO, succeeding Steven Barnhart who will leave in April after six years with the company to "pursue other interests." Harford has served on the boards of eLong and Kayak, and marked his time at Expedia by building in Asia-Pacific and developing the company's air, car, private label and telesales businesses.
