It appears we're moving in the right direction as far as recovery for business and meetings travel. I was very encouraged by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) report of some positive figures on airline traffic. IATA reported a growth pace that, barring any global catastrophic event, will soon bring passenger volumes back to what they were before the recession!

You can either read this post as some more gloom and doom news for our industry, or you can see the following information as yet more proof of how much buying opportunity will continue to present itself for your company's meetings and events.
Earlier this month, at Smith Travel Research's first-ever Hotel Data Conference, more than half of attendees polled predicted that revenue per available room at hotels won't start going back into positive territory again until the latter half of 2010 or beyond. Further, more than one-third think it'll take even longer -- until 2011 or beyond. And what about rates? Of the 88 attendees polled, a little more than one-third think recovery will come in 2011 or beyond, while about 30% say rates will climb again in fourth-quarter 2010. Another 16% see third-quarter 2010 as the more likely scenario.

More and more news stories seem to want to declare the bottom of the decline or even the end of the recession. While this is the news many of us are longing to see and I’m hopeful the next year will be one of recovery, what does this mean for the business travel industry?

Only those open to change will reap the rewards

From a technological point of view, the travel industry is not the hunter, but the hunted. Innovations are neither fostered nor developed to the necessary extent. Suppliers, distributors, travel management companies, but also technology providers are partially to blame for this. However, new concepts can help the travel industry to reduce costs, master crises and offer better products.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts during the past two months has cut jobs in the sales and marketing departments, including corporate sales, sources said.
Just how many were let go is a matter of speculation at the moment. A spokesman has declined to respond to repeated requests for comment.

Orbitz Worldwide said it would cut $20 million to $25 million in annual expenses, on top of the $20 million announced in November that brought with it 100 job cuts. Officials today did not say how many positions the current action would eliminate, but outgoing president and CEO Steve Barnhart said, "On the people side, this is much more heavily focused on outsourced or external contractual resources.
