On Farelogix's Open Source Point Of Sale

Re: TECH: Farelogix To Offer 'Open Source' Point Of Sale

Jim's announcement is very credible. I have often said there was little profit to be gained from self-booking by travelers because of attendant time costs for users' employers. And also that self-booking is not a logical profit center for intermediaries.

Open source is more than a catch-phrase. When Richard Eastman first explained to me how he and his colleagues invented Aqua, I was amazed at how simple a proposition it was and is. We keep building security devices to protect our patents when those patents are worthless to us unless we cause change that reduces costs in other areas. Interactive voice response technology as designed by The Eastman Group for AcuFlight is one clearly affordable option that requires no new bells and whistles and minimal training. It is, to all intents and purposes, open-source software that takes an ancient device--a phone--and communicates with voice prompts to a database (global distribution system) of purchasable products.
