Social Media Gone Mad

I love late March, when the cherry blossoms are in bloom in DC and when the focus of the sports world turns to the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. I admit it: I love March Madness. For years, I've organized contests with friends, colleagues and family around the tourney. We played for pride ... and the prize money, of course ... but this was always secondary to the ego trip the winner takes on for the next 12 months.

This year, I was inspired to do something for a greater cause. Maybe it was the articles I read where charities are truly suffering in this economy. Or maybe it was because my company is becoming a leader in corporate responsibility, and we are always looking for new and creative ways to contribute. Or maybe it's because my colleague Rana Walker is pushing me towards greater involvement in social media ... and I feel like this is one of the oldest forms.

Thus, we've organized a tournament for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, a charity that AirPlus supports globally. We've utilized an easy, secure and simple Web site to collect, track and distribute the funds to Make-A-Wish. This website allows you to quickly build a page, pick a cause for a turn-key, low maintenance program. It tracks the funds raised and distributes the tax documentation to individuals and it's something I recommend for those considering fundraisers of your own in the future!

All the information is available on our site, www.firstgiving.com/AirPlus. We are awarding a new 8GB iPod nano to the winner of the tournament pool. Note: No donation is necessary to participate, but we do hope you will sign on to give, as no donation is too small or large.
